Fragility. What does that mean to you? Something frail? Is it delicate? Worthless or fleeting? Valuable? Deserving of care? The other day on a hike, I snapped these photos to include in a series about the death and re-birth of nature's life cycle. We are part of this cycle. One day our bodies are given back to the earth, and only our memories remain. We are what we leave behind. The lessons we taught, the children we may have had, the pain we inflicted on others, the families we shared our meals with, a photograph of a toothy grin that will bring someone to tears when they pull it out from between the clinched pages of a forgotten book. We are temporary here, just as the moving tide erases our footprints. What are you leaving behind?

The novel Lord of The Rings speaks of entities that are a race resembling giant trees. They mirror mythological stories found around the world of talking trees, and in The Lord of The Rings, they act as shepherds of the forests. I have a fascination with trees, and it shows up in my work quite often. Trees are so multifaceted, signifying both the beginning and end of life. They live, die, and are reborn. They have been silent witnesses to the wonders and atrocities of the world and hold so many secrets and stories within them.
